ASHLEY Johnson's try was the only consolation as Wasps' fine recent run came to a crashing halt against Gloucester in the LV=Cup this afternoon.

They were beaten 36-5 to end another miserable campaign in the competition.

Dai Young again gave a number of his squad players the chance to impress him, but it was the hosts who took their opportunities with two tries apiece from centre Henry Tinder and full back Matt Cox and a fifth from Dan Murphy consigning Wasps to their third defeat in four pool games.

The only tournament highlight came against London Irish at Adams Park last weekend, but the black and golds never looked like repeating that performance as Gloucester came at them from the first whistle.

Gloucester had already been held up over the line and missed a penalty by the time Trinder went over for the first score after 13 minutes.

Cook squandered the conversion, but it hardly mattered and five minutes later the hosts were in again ater Trinder ran the length of the pitch to touch down after an intercept deep in his own territory.

This time Cook did add the extras to make it 12-0, and it was just about all over by the end of the first quarter as Gloucester went over again.

Cox scored it after poor handling cost Wasps as the Cherry and Whites maintained their point-a-minute start.

Johnson did respond soon afterwards with yet another try from a driving line-out, and for ten minutes Wasps threatened a comeback with a string of penalties all kicked to the corners.

However, they couldn't turn that pressure into points and just before the interval Gloucester increased their lead to 22-5 off the tee.

Wasps began the second period on the front foot, but again they found points hard to come by and the momentum soon petered out as the home team again took over the match.

And they had no such trouble making it count with their fourth try coming from a driving line out after 59 minutes.

The conversion made it 29-5 and after Chris Bell was sin binned the hosts rounded off a rampant victory with try number five. The real business resumes next weekend though, when a vastly different Wasps team will go to The Stoop to take on Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership.
