Amersham undone by last-minute penalty
AMERSHAM & Chiltern RFC picked up two valuable points but still left Devon frustrated after a last-minute penalty consigned them to defeat at Newton Abbot.
Craig Burgess’ men were aiming for a National League 3 South West double after a 27-10 home win earlier in the campaign, but despite scoring five tries the were on the wrong end of a topsy turvy match.
Dave Skelton scored the first of them against the run of play, picking up a chip ahead that wasn’t dealt with by the home back three, but Newton Abbot replied with a converted try to lead 7-5.
However, Tim Lloyd restored Amersham’s lead with a converted try after 19 minutes and it got even better soon afterwards when Dave John went over in the corner to make the score 17-7.
Had they held that lead to the break it might have been a different story, but Newton Abbot cut the gap to three points by crossing themselves just before the break, and a third try just after it gave them the lead at 22-17.
Danny Samuels’ bonus point score levelled the match again, but two home tries in five minutes appeared to have finally shaken Amersham off.
A converted try from Tom Shiel coupled with Jack Kenyon’s penalty after 75 minutes hauled them back into it, only for a penalty in the final moments to break their resistance.
They don’t play on Saturday but return to action the following weekend with a home match against Old Redcliffians.
