Griffiths stars with overtime masterclass
HIGH Wycombe’s Clare Griffiths helped the GB Women’s wheelchair basketball team to their highest ever finish at the World Championships last week, when she scored four overtime points to see off Australia.
Great Britain had never finished inside the top five before and had their work cut out again when they were cast into the fifth-eighth place play-offs by a 53-41 loss to America in the quarter-finals.
But they bounced back from that disappointment to beat France 58-41 and secure a place in the fifth and sixth place play-off against London 2012 silver medalists Australia.
GB led 18-16 after the first quarter and moved that to 35-28 by half time.
But Australia closed gap to a point at 49-48 after the third quarter before drawing level at 64-64 each at full time.
That meant overtime, and GB reversed the momentum superbly to clinch an historical victory 77-70.
Griffiths, who scored 20 points throughout the Championship, said: “That was our best team performance – we stuck to the game plan and kept on top of our emotions all the way through the game.
“We didn’t get flustered by Australia: we shot with composure throughout the match and at the end we made big baskets that turned the screw on them.”
