JOSH Scowen is a doubt for Wanderers' first match of the season after being stretchered off against Barnet on Saturday.

The midfielder injured his ankle in what appeared to be an innocuous clash in the second half of the friendly and had to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

But the injury isn't as bad as first feared and Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth refused to completely rule the 21-year-old out of contention for the trip to Newport County.

The Wanderers medical team had hoped Scowen might have been fit enough to train today, but in the end he wasn't able to take part.

Ainsworth said: "Nobody actually knows [the extent of the injury] apart from my medical staff and they'll be treating it conservatively. It's still touch and go.

"There were no hospitals, no scans or anything. He looks a lot better than he thought it was."

Ainsworth also has fitness concerns over fellow central midfielder Stuart Lewis and winger Paris Cowan-Hall.

Lewis is also recovering from an ankle injury, sustained in Wanderers' 2-1 friendly win at Wealdstone last week.

Meanwhile Cowan-Hall played the second half against Barnet with heavy strapping on the back of his leg to protect a slight hamstring problem.

The former Plymouth man was Blues' star performer in the pre season bleep test but he only had two 45 minute run-outs in the seven friendly matches Wanderers played.
