GARETH Ainsworth said he was delighted at a dominant debut display from defender Alfie Mawson.

The 20-year-old had barely met his new team mates after arriving at Adams Park on a month's loan from Brentford, but instantly gelled with the rest of the Wanderers back four as they kept a clean sheet at Newport on Saturday.

Ainsworth moved to bring in Mawson after Gary Doherty injured knee ligaments in training, meaning he will be out for up to eight weeks.

He played alongside his former Brentford team mate Aaron Pierre and the pair looked like they had been playing together for years.

Ainsworth said: "If I had to single anyone out, Alfie Mawson's come in and done a tremendous job on his league debut. I don't like singling people out but let's single him out - it's his league debut for goodness sake and he didn't put a foot wrong.

"I've known about Alfie, I've seen him play. He's very similar to Aaron Pierre, he came in and dominated. You want your centre halves to do that.

"He's a young lad, he's got a lot to learn, but he's got all the tools to be a good player."
