CHESHAM United will sit on the sidelines this weekend while other teams return to The FA Cup, but manager Andy Leese is confident better results are on the way.

They’ve won just once in September, but Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Cirencester was their season in microcosm as a highly controversial penalty gave their hosts an unexpected lead.

A second goal followed shortly afterwards and Leese’s men spent the rest of the match banging on the door before finally salvaging a point with goals from Ryan Blake and Toby Little after 89 and 91 minutes.

Leese said: “No one in the ground saw it as a penalty. To be fair to them they put us on the back foot after that, but we changed our formation at half time and then again in the second half.

“We’re actually playing better than our results suggest. We need to take more of our chances, that is pretty evident, but we just need to put together a run of games and we’re capable of doing it.

“Injuries haven’t helped. We’ve constantly changed our back four and had to play formations we didn’t want to, but once we settle down we will see a change of results, I’m sure.

“It might be the second half of the season before we come good and the key between now and then is to make sure we stay in touch with the top of the league.

“But I’m confident in the group of players we have here.”
