Alfie Mawson will be staying with Wanderers until the end of the season after his loan deal was extended.

The initial deal expired on January 1 - but following a number of outstanding displays at the heart of the Blues defence, manager Gareth Ainsworth moved quickly to extend it through to the end of the campaign.

And Mawson will be available to play for the club in the play offs, should Wanderers go through the end of season promotion lottery.

Ainsworth said: “Alfie had never played a Football League game before he came to us and slotted into the team like a seasoned professional from the very first day. His performances have been of a consistently high standard and it’s great for Wycombe Wanderers that we’re able to keep him and aid his development for the whole season.

“We have a great relationship with Brentford and would like to thank them for entrusting us with one of their young talents and allowing him to stay with us.”

The loan deal does not include a recall clause.

Mawson tweeted earlier today after the news was confirmed: "Thanks for the messages, more than happy to be staying for the rest of the season, great club #WWFC."

Mawson is set to be included in the Wanderers side that faces bottom of the table Hartlepool United at Adams Park this afternoon, with Blues looking to get back to winning ways after drawing their last three matches.
