Steven Craig had extra reason to celebrate after Wanderers’ pulsating play-off semi-final first leg victory against Plymouth on Saturday as his second half strike was his 100th career goal.

The Sky cameras were on hand to see the Scotsman bring up his century after he caught the Pilgrims defence napping before slamming a neat finish past Luke McCormick to put Blues 3-0 up.

It was the 34-year-old’s third goal of the season and his eighth in Wycombe colours since signing from Partick in July 2013, but an injury he sustained shortly after scoring at Home Park cast a shadow over his landmark goal.

“I’ve tweaked my hamstring,” he said. “I did it about two or three minutes after my goal so I hope it’s not as bad as it first felt. I’ll get the physio to take a look at it tonight (Saturday).

He continued: “To score my 100th career goal and join the 100 club is special for me. I have to say a massive thanks to Sam Saunders for laying it on a plate for me.

“You don’t switch off anytime in a game and Sam’s intelligent enough to see I was there and he put it on a plate for me.”

The striker’s goal looked to have taken Wanderers a huge step closer to reaching Wembley as they assumed complete control of the tie at 3-0 up with just five minutes of normal time remaining.

But a quickfire double from substitutes Zak Ansah and Jason Banton dragged Plymouth back from the brink and means they travel to Adams Park on Thursday just a goal behind.

Craig said: “We should be pleased to come down to Plymouth and score three goals in the manner that we did.

“I don’t think anybody’s done that this season and, bar the last ten minutes, everything was ideal. It’s like taking a 1-0 lead back to Adams Park on Thursday and if somebody had offered us that at the start of the game we’d have chewed their hand off, so I’m delighted with that.

“I’m disappointed because I’ve picked up an injury, so we’ll have to wait and see how that is for Thursday.”

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth felt his team’s display in front of a packed Home Park crowd was one of their best all season – a sentiment which Craig agreed with.

“I think you’ve got to look at the performance as well – 80-82 minutes of sheer dominance,” he said.

“They’ll (Plymouth) know they will need to up their game when they came to Adams Park and we know that the home support will get behind us just like the away support did today. They were fantastic. It’s definitely an advantage in our hands.”

The Scottish forward also revealed that the Chairboys’ display may have been fuelled by some comments made by the Pilgrims camp ahead of the first leg.

He said: “There was a few things said from Plymouth that they were glad that they got us, which was a strange thing to say as we’ve got the best away record in the Football League.

“For 80-odd minutes, to be 3-0 up is a massive credit to the gaffer and the boys. Having a 3-2 lead still gives us a massive advantage going into the second leg.”
