Wanderers have brought Southampton youngster Jason McCarthy to Adams Park on an initial one-month loan.

The 19-year-old centre-back, who is captain of the Saints Under-21 side, made his Premier League debut on Boxing Day last year as an 87th-minute substitute in a 3-1 win against Crystal Palace.

The loan will run until November 12 and Chairboys manager Gareth Ainsworth is happy to have added to a defensive unit that he concedes has been found wanting recently.

“Our last two games haven’t reached our high standards defensively and he’s a new option for us,” he explained.

“Jason’s a very highly-rated defender who’s had very good experience at Under-21 at Southampton and they feel he is ready to go out and get a taste of what senior football is like at League 2 level.

“I’d like to thank Southampton for allowing Jason to move here and we’re looking forward to helping him develop his game during his time with us.”

McCarthy played an important role in helping Southampton to the Under-21 Premier League Cup last season and is no stranger to the Blues home ground having played in the Saints' 5-2 Under-21 victory at Adams Park just last month.

While he is predominantly a centre-back, McCarthy can also deputise on the right side of defence and is in contention to feature in Wanderers Sky Bet League 2 match at Stevenage on Saturday.

McCarthy is held in high regard at Southampton and has started 26 times for Martin Hunter’s highly talented and much praised Under-21 team.
