Luke O’Nien and Aaron Amadi-Holloway scored as Wycombe Wanderers beat Mansfield Town 2-0 at Field Mill in League Two.

The result ends a run of five games in a row without a win and means they enter a two week break from league action in a positive mindset.

The victory owed much to the performance of goalkeeper Matt Ingram who produced a string of impressive saves to maintain the Blues lead.

Amadi-Holloway scored in the last minute to put the gloss on a solid performance which moved Wanderers to within three points of third place with a game in hand.

The Stags had the first attempt on goal as a smart piece of hold up play allowed Adam Chapman to drill a shot in from the edge of the box which Ingram did well to hold.

Moments later, and with less than 10 minutes played, Chapman again tested the Wanderers goalkeeper but his shot from inside the box was easily stopped by Ingram.

Wycombe took the lead in the eighth minute after O’Nien latched onto a Garry Thompson knock down and stooped to head the opener from five yards.

It was the Blues first meaningful incursion in the Mansfield half and O’Nien was well rewarded for a committed run from deep to get involved with the attack.

Town’s Craig Westcarr saw his effort form long-range float harmlessly over the bar as the frenetic pace of the opening exchanges continued throughout the half.

Left-back Blair Adams produced a similarly poor finish as he fired high from the edge of the box with just Ingram to beat after 19 minutes.

Despite having the lead the Chairboys struggled to assert any measure of dominance on proceedings as Mansfield looked for a route back into the game.

Westcarr again shot at Ingram’s goal from distance but his powerful effort, which was goal bound, was bravely blocked by Aaron Pierre.

Adams got in behind the Wycombe defence shortly before half-time and sent in a dangerous cross that bypassed everyone as it flew across the face of goal.

After spending much of the first period defending Wanderers’ Jason McCarthy had a chance to double the lead but flicked wide when unmarked inside the area.

The final meaningful act of the first half saw Ingram produce a fine save from Matt Green who had controlled well in the box. It was ultimately inconsequential though as the linesman’s flag was up.

As much as Town had the better of the first period their inability to produce an end product meant Wanderers held their lead fairly comfortably at the interval.

With less than a minute played in the second half Ingram was forced into a fine save as he sprung to his right to deny Lee Collins’ header from nestling in the top corner.

It was the standout save in a performance that belied any signs of the injury that had meant he was a doubt to start the game.

O’Nien was involved in proceedings again as he led a Wycombe break and exchanged passes with Thompson before sending in a cross to Sam Wood.

Wood, who was unmarked at the back post, was put off by a defender and missed the ball completely.

In the 50th minute Thompson had a big chance to make it 2-0 when Paul Hayes’ pass put him through on goal.

He did well to lift the ball over the onrushing Brian Jensen but the Mansfield keeper got a vital touch on the ball and a defender prevented it from crossing the line.

Wycombe were now having a greater influence in the attacking third and Joe Jacobson had a 25-yard volley deflect wide a couple of minutes later.

With just over an hour played Green set off on a driving run into the Blues box but his effort was well blocked by the sliding challenge of Pierre.

By now Wanderers were once again on the back foot and substitute Adi Yusuf went close for the home side as his deflected effort went just wide.

With 20 minutes to play Green found himself in space on the edge of the Chairboys box but much like his teammates in the first half sent his shot high over the bar.

Nathan Thomas’ twisting run left Pierre chasing shadows but Ingram got down well to save his low strike with his legs with just over 10 minutes left.

Paul Hayes limped off with late on after Ingram had produced another fine save to maintain the Wycombe lead.

The Wycombe captain’s fitness may well benefit from the enforced break awarded to Wycombe because of the postponement of their match with Notts County.

Amadi Holloway broke through in injury time and volleyed home clinically to seal a win that sees Wycombe go into the FA Cup next Sunday in positive mood.
