High Wycombe RUFC’s season came to a nail-biting conclusion as they narrowly avoided relegation from the South West One East Division on Saturday.

A 65-7 defeat to Maidenhead meant Wycombe were relying on results elsewhere to ensure they maintained their place in the division.

The relegation dogfight involved three teams heading into the final day with Wycombe duking it out with Trowbridge and Reading to avoid the ignominy of joining Swanage & Wareham in the relegation zone.

Reading had started the day in the bottom two, but a narrow 32-28 win over Salisbury saw them climb above Wycombe to safety.

That result meant any sort of win for Trowbridge would condemn Wycombe to the drop.

As it turned out Wycombe needn’t have worried as Trowbridge, who haven’t won a game since the end of January, slipped to an utterly predictable 29-0 defeat to Newbury Blues.

Elsewhere, Beaconsfield’s season ended on a sour note as they suffered an 18-13 loss to already relegated Swindon College Old Boys in the Southern Counties North.

Beaconsfield’s end of season form has been poor to say the least as they have lost four of their final five games.

The results have seen them slip down the division and they end their campaign sitting perfectly in mid-table in sixth position.

The final day defeat carried particular disappointment for Beaconsfield as all of the teams above them also lost.

Their rivals’ poor results meant they could have climbed to fourth had they picked up a win against a Swindon side who have lost all but four of their league games this season.

In the same division, Marlow climbed to seventh with a comfortable 32-12 victory over Drifters.

Bletchley’s 29-21 defeat against Stow-on-the-Wold allowed Marlow to finish the campaign one point above them.

An almost 20 point gap to Beaconsfield ensured there was no chance of Marlow moving ahead of their local rivals in the final standings but they can take heart from a productive weekend.
