Tyrrell Hatton has completed the best week of his golfing career by finishing in a tie for fifth place at the Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The Marlow golfer was in contention for a top-ten finish after scores of 70, 71 and 71 left him on one-under-par after the first three rounds and he shot a superb 68 today to end his tournament on four-under-par alongside Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia, 16 shots behind record-breaking champion Henrik Stenson.

Having finished second at the Scottish Open last Sunday, the 24-year-old maintained his fine form this week and is now guaranteed a place in the field at next year’s Open at Royal Birkdale by virtue of his top-ten finish.

Hatton got off to the ideal start with a birdie on the par four first and went out in a two-under-par score of 34 after another birdie on the par four seventh.

The only dropped shot of his round came on the par four 11th, but the Harleyford Golf Club member quickly retrieved that by birdying the par four 12th and his fourth birdie of the round came on the par five 16th.

Hatton’s best ever result at a major championship means he has now moved up into ninth place in the Race to Dubai standings.

Hatton’s impressive recent form has seen him climb up the world rankings to 55th in the world and he is now the eighth highest ranked Englishman.
