WYCOMBE WANDERERS’ extraordinary winning run continued with an excellent 2-0 victory over Notts County in an incident-packed League Two encounter at Meadow Lane.

A 37th minute header from the irrepressible Adebayo Akinfenwa and a tap-in from in-form striker Scott Kashket on 55 minutes gave the Chairboys a seventh win in a row.

The inspired Akinfenwa scored the opener with a terrific header past Adam Collin after a sublime cross from Joe Jacobson.

Kashket doubled the advantage ten minutes into the second half when Akinfenwa expertly flicked a header onto Paris Cowan-Hall who raced past a static County to square for Kashket who tapped home, despite complaints that the striker was offside.

In between the goals, County captain Michael O’Connor was given a straight red by referee Eddie Ilderton for a lunge at Cowan-Hall with protests by his County team-mates falling on deaf ears.

On 77 minutes, Ilderton made it ten-a-side when he sent off Akinfenwa for his second booking of the match after an aerial challenge with Richard Duffy.

Ainsworth made one change to the team that hammered Chesterfield 5-0 last Saturday, with injured skipper Paul Hayes making way for Cowan-Hall.

It was a positive start from the Chairboys with Luke O’Nien playing Kashket through in the first minute but the former Leyton Orient man couldn’t get it under control.

County created their first chance after 16 minutes when Matt Tootle cut in and cracked a shot from the edge of the area just wide of Jamal Blackman’s left hand post.

Veteran striker Jon Stead was returning from injury and his presence was causing the Wycombe defence problems with his clever hold up play.

Stead then had the best chance of the game so far on 22 minutes when he evaded Aaron Pierre and lashed a shot inches away from the target with Blackman struggling.

The Magpies were beginning to up the pace and two minutes later, Stead’s cross was flicked goalwards by Jonathan Forte but no-one was on hand to follow up.

On 28 minutes, Forte had a goal disallowed when he rounded Blackman after an excellent pass from Stead but he was adjudged to be offside.

Three minutes later, Wycombe came back strongly and Kashket, oozing confidence, weaved his way into the County area but saw his shot deflect agonisingly wide.

Wanderers were starting to hit their straps and Paris Cowan-Hall hit an ambitious half-volley off target after some good play between himself and Matt Bloomfield.

Wycombe then took the lead on 37 minutes when Jacobson did brilliantly to work some space down the left and he whipped in a fantastic cross which was headed home superbly by Akinfenwa.

Akinfenwa was causing County’s defence all kinds of problems and on the stroke of half-time he brought the ball down superbly before hitting a rasping strike just over the crossbar.

O’Connor’s red card on half-time then followed, which gave Wanderers a huge boost entering the second half.

The Chairboys came out on the front foot with a real purpose in the second half and Akinfenwa almost played in Bloomfield on 46 minutes but Collin blocked it before the Wycombe club captain could get there.

Moments later, O’Nien saw his piledriver rise over Collin’s woodwork after a surging run.

Wycombe then doubled their advantage on 55 minutes when Cowan-Hall squared for Kashket who celebrated in front of the delirious Chairboys travelling support.

Ainsworth’s charges were then happy to try and keep possession and frustrate County, who now had a mountain to climb.

Akinfenwa’s strength and power almost rewarded the away side again on 68 minutes when another Jacobson cross fell to him but he headed straight at Collin.

A minute later, the colossal frontman was at it again, outmuscling his man but his shot was easily stopped by the County custodian.

Wycombe were knocking the ball round with purpose and they weren’t allowing County a sniff, seeing the game out expertly and like a team full of confidence.

More good work from Akinfenwa presented a chance to Bloomfield on 75 minutes, who saw his piledriver hit a Magpies defender to go for a corner.

However, the brilliant Bayo was given his second booking on 77 minutes to give County a chink of light.

The Magpies were buoyed by this and started to play a little more directly, although the Wanderers rearguard stood firm.

Another fantastic win for Wycombe sees them firmly in the playoffs and a home game against Leyton Orient to look forward to next weekend.
