WYCOMBE Wanderers’ manager Gareth Ainsworth was delighted with his team’s performance after they beat league leaders Doncaster Rovers 2-1 at Adams Park.

A brace from Luke O’Nien, either side of a heavily deflected goal from Alfie May, was enough for the Chairboys as they went within one point of the play offs with two games left.

The win brings to an end a seven-game winless run at Adams Park for the side, who now face a tricky trip to Morecambe before the last match of the season versus Cambridge at home.

To have any hope of getting promoted to League One, the Chairboys must win both their games and hope other results go their way, and they’re still within a chance of finishing fifth in what is a heavily congested race for the play offs.

But, Ainsworth said the squad’s focus would be squarely on the trip to Lancashire on Saturday, although he admitted they were overjoyed at the win.

He said: “We are very pleased with that, the performance and the game plan was there.

“Over the course of the season, you hope you get what you deserve and I thought we deserved to win today, although they are a superb team with a brilliant manager.

“They are already promoted because they deserve it, but we came up with a plan and got it right today.

“We are so pleased with the performance, everywhere across the pitch, the centre backs, the full backs, midfield, up front, we have got the belief just at the right time.

“This time last season, we had a lot of injures so we have tried to manage it throughout the season and it’s paying dividends now.”

Ainsworth also felt the fact Wycombe had been written off in the play-of race worked for them.

“Being written off is not always a bad thing,” he said.

“Sometimes, you want to go out and prove people wrong.

“We’ve got a couple of big games now. The table is mental, it’s crazy.

“We can’t relax and think we’re closer than anyone else, we need to keep going, we want to finish in the play offs.”

There were several stand-out performances from Joe Jacobson, Sam Saunders, Adebayo Akinfenwa and match-winner Luke O’Nien, but Ainsworth said the win was a team effort, and the tactics.

“The players were great, Luke took his chances well, Sido Jombati and Akinfenwa were outstanding.

“Matt Bloomfield and Saunders in the middle were great, putting pressure on their midfield. Luke O’Nien will take all the plaudits but I thought it was a great team performance “Akinfenwa has done it all season. We were not going to try and play football against the best football team in League 2, we needed to destroy their midfield and deal with their formation, and at times we couldn’t.

“We rode our luck at times, I thought Alfie May going off helped us, he was fantastic and thought he was playing really well.

“Sometimes you get your breaks, Doncaster have proved they are the best team in this division, they’ve got a great manager and I’ve got a huge amount of respect for him.”

Ainsworth also lavished praise on the fans.

He said: “I thought the fans were brilliant today, they never stopped singing.

“We’ve asked for the fans recently. Sometimes there’s an atmosphere we should win every home game, but today we were the underdog and we need that sometimes, we need them, especially at the end of games when it’s tight.

“But at the same time, we have to give them something to shout about on the pitch and I think we did that today.

“We are fantastic away from home, and we’re not on a bad run, we have drawn three of those games and away from home we are performing really well. People can change statistics to see what they want, we’re not worried about it.”
