COMEBACK keeper Jamie Young says he considered leaving the club after finding himself axed after conceding seven against Shrewsbury in October.

He said: “It did cross my mind to ask to go on loan or something but where would I go? I didn’t want to play in the Conference so I knew I just had to keep working hard and ride it out.

“I’m not one for going in to see the manager, I knew the only thing I could do was work hard in training, wait for my chance to come again and then grab it.”

The Aussie did just that when he was suprisingly chosen to replace Scott Shearer for Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Dagenham – the best attacking side in the division.

Young said: “It was a real surprise to me when the manager read the team out in the hotel. I never expected to be playing but I was ready for it.”

And he says the memory of that black night in October didn’t even enter his head as he prepared for the game.

He said: “I was pretty nervous because I knew this was a big chance for me.

“But I never thought of those seven goals until you just mentioned it. When something like that happens you just have to forget it. Being a goalie is either bad or brilliant. It is brilliant if you are playing and not if you are aren’t.

“I am pleased to be back in and I will be disappointed if I’m not playing against Rotherham on Monday, but I know I can’t rest on my laurels. There is still a long way to go this season.

“I believe I should be playing and now the opportunity has been given to me it is up to me to grasp it. But I know one game counts for nothing. I’ve got to do it over a period of time.”
