VICKY Fouhy won her first national title and became the fastest English U20 runner this year when she won the 1,500 metres at the England Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

The former Dr Challoners High School student sliced five seconds off her personal best to win with new best figures of four minutes, 28.93 seconds.

Her time wiped out her outdoor PB of 4:34.32 secs and also came within 1.2 seconds of the Championship record on a track where the Windsor Slough Eton & Hounlsow athlete has not enjoyed the best of fortunes.

A year ago she was forced to pull up injured after one lap of the 800m and this year she had intended to run both, only to pull out of the 800m when she discovered the events were scheduled virtually back-to-back.

And it proved a wise decision from the versatile University of Birmingham Med student from Little Chalfont who, this time last year, was also a member of the England netball team which won gold at the European Championships.

She was joined on the victory podium in Birmingham by another up and coming South Bucks athlete.

Sir William Borlase’s student Morgan Lake won the the U15 long jump even though she is still an U13 competitor. She jumped 5.04 metres, in the first and third rounds of the competition to clinch the national gold.

l Pippa Woolven completed her domination of the Chiltern League Cross-Country series as she wrapped up another victory in the fifth and final run.

The Wycombe Phoenix Harrier stormed to gold in the U17 race to take the individual title.

With fellow Harrier Georgina Corkett finishing fourth on the day, Woolven also collected the team gold.

Her form was matched by Wycombe team-mate Sanjay Sivia, who was the fastest of the U17 men.

Aidan Brace (2nd) and Isaac Nahoor (3rd) were just behind him to ensure a second team gold for Wycombe Phoenix.

The U15 boys also wrapped up team gold.

Tom Claessans, who won a series silver, led Phoenix home in third place with support coming from Kit England Archibald (5th) and Liam Rooney (7th).

Iain Hill, Chris Searby, Sam Price and Kieran Gilfedder were just behind them.

The U15 girls team of Georgina Russell and Immy Hillier were also in the medals, winning bronze on the day and for the series, while the U13 boys won series gold thanks largely to Toby Warshare.

Warshare missed the final race, but his form in the previous four earned him individual silver.

The U13 girls duo of Susie Harwood and Caitlin Neale just missed out in fourth place overall.

At the same event, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow runner Maryse Haynes missed out on the medals by just two seconds.

She finished sixth on the day and fourth in the series.

There was better luck for Kieron Wye, whose silver medal on the day secured him series silver too.

Other WSEH athlete picking up awards were Bex Myers and Louisa Lingley, in the combined U17/U20 event, while James Bennington was fourth in the U15 race and Nick Langley was seventh at U17 level.

l WSEH training partners Aimee Brameld and Aleksia Zivanovic both recorded fine runs in recent schools cross-country races.

Running for Prestwood Middle, Brameld found her stride to take her first win in this meet, following third and second-place finishes.

Zivanovic, of Godstowe Prep, finished second in the Chesham & District schools match.
