ROB Webber is confident he will force his way into the full England squad – he just hopes it’s in time for the World Cup.

The 23-year-old Wasp is now a regular feature in the Saxons side and was back at Wasps this week after helping England’s second string to wins over Ireland A and Italy A.

He said: “The Saxons has to be viewed as a stepping stone.

“We do a lot of similar things in the way we train and play to make that progression easier and we trained against the senior squad prior to their game against Wales so there is a lot of crossover.”

Webber played every Guinness Premiership game for Wasps last season and he has managed to enhance his reputation this season while others in the pack have found the going tough at times.

He said: “I’m confident if I can keep developing, hopefully I can push for the full England squad in the not too distant future.

“I haven’t got a timeline because you never know with injuries – I had an injury earlier this year and it set me back – and it’s up to the coaches at the end of the day.

“All I can do it keep working hard. I’ve got a lot to learn still and that’s something I’m trying to do – off coaches, senior players, anyone who will tell me anything.

“But I’d like to think I wasn’t too far away considering I’ve been in the Saxons.”

With fellow Wasps hooker Joe Ward fighting back from illness (he was sick on the pitch at Newcastle before being replaced after 35 minutes), Webber looks set to start against Sale on Sunday.

It’s a game Wasps can’t afford to lose, and Webber has urged the fans to get behind their team.

He said: “We need to really push on and pick up as many points as we can at Adams Park.

“We need to turn it into a fortress and get the big crowds in and making some noise, because you can definitely tell the difference between 8,000 and 10,000 and hearing the fans cheering us really does spur us on.”
