AMERSHAM & Chiltern RFC insist they won’t take their eyes off the ball as a potential last-day showdown with Witney draws nearer.

The Bucks club turned the Southern Counties North title-race into a two-horse race by going to third-placed Grove and winning 48-13 recently, and captain Dan Kinsey admits the Witney fixture is a big focus point.

He said: “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t in the back of our minds. “The bottom line is if both teams win their remaining games then it will be a straight shoot-out on the final day.”

Witney beat Amersham 14-10 on the opening day of the season. Since then Amersham have won 13 games in a row and, with Witney slipping up against Windsor, the pair have pulled clear at the top on 26 points each.

Kinsey said: “We’re all desperate to finish top of the league and we do talk about it.

“It’s the big focus for us and we are aware that every Saturday is the next big challenge.

“We’ve got eight games left and we need to win all of those because if we lose even a couple then it’s all pointless.”

And as long as both teams keep winning the pressure will continue to be ramped up week on week.

That is where Kinsey believes the approach of coach Matt Allen will stand them in good stead.

He said: “I don’t think the pressure will get to us.

“When we turned up at Grove there was some debate as to whether the game would go ahead because the pitch was frozen.

“But we assumed the game was on until told otherwise and we warmed up properly.

“Grove didn’t and we just blew them away in the first half.

“I think that sums up our professionalism and will to win now.

“A couple of seasons ago we’d have thought we weren’t going to play and switched off butMatt Allen has changed our approach. He has played at a much higher level and his drive has rubbed off on us.”
