CHESHAM bounced back from last week's shock FA Cup exit to record a 1-0 win at Banbury United in the league.

The Generals, who were dumped out of the famous knockout competition by lower league Brackley, used Saturday's fixture as the perfect pick-me-up thanks to Gary Sippetts' 60th minute winner.

The result, which lifted Chesham up to ninth in the Southern League Premier Division, was just what manager Steve Bateman was looking for as his side kept pace with the league's front-runners.

United had failed to win either of their last two league games going into the weekend after a mini revival had seem them creep up the table.

Sippetts almost got on the scoresheet after just three minute as his side raced out of the blocks but the striker failed to convert the cross from the right.

Just past the quarter-hour mark, Leon Callendar went on a mazy run to leave Banbury defenders in his wake but the youngster fired his shot straight at goalkeeper Simon Tricker.

Tricker's opposite number Darren Bonfield had to scramble across his line in the 34th minute to push away a header and prevent a certain goal for the hosts.

Chesham continued to work hard in midfield and those efforts were rewarded when they bagged the all-important opener after some good link-up play.

A cross from the right found Sippetts, who had managed to work himself some space, and he made no mistake to slot home from close range.

Banbury went close soon after but the visitors were proving a tough nut to crack at the back and kept chances against them to a minimum.

Bonfield looked desperate to keep his side's second clean sheet in the league this season and was marshalling his backline well.

Andre Scarlett almost put the game beyond doubt with 15 minutes remaining but Tricker pulled off a fine stop to prevent the winger.

Bonfield was then called into action in the 85th minute when he saved George Redknapp's header and virtually guaranteed all three points for his side.

United have now taken 13 points from their opening eight games but are just three points behind Mangotsfield United who currently occupy third place in the table.
