BLUES boss Gary Waddock refused to point the finger of blame at Grant Basey after Wanderers drew with Oldham – but admits his missed penalty has made things harder for Blues.

The full-back was looking to repeat what he did in injury time at Stevenage a fortnight ago but he pulled his late penalty wide.

Then Oldham got an even later penalty that was tucked away by Robbie Simpson as Wanderers had to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw.

Victory would have taken Blues to within a point of safety – but Waddock instead looked at the positives, as the draw moves them ever so slightly closer to freefalling Leyton Orient than at kick off.

He said: “There’s moments that change a season and if we got three points today the picture would have looked a lot better. There’s three games left and if teams in and around us lose and we win one, we go ahead of them. We’ve made it a touch harder for ourselves but it’s not over. It could be a lot better. It’s a point closer to everybody else.

“It’s very hard at the moment to take and look at it that way. That group of players in that dressing room is devastated. The run they’ve been on, the disappointment they had at Chesterfield, to get ourselves in this position is a great credit to them.

“There’s defining moments in the game and seasons. No blame should be put on Grant Basey because he did the same thing at Stevenage. He’s devastated.”

Waddock was looking for a reaction from his players after their 4-0 defeat at Chesterfield on Easter Monday and he felt he got it after the break.

He said: “First half was flat. We had a little chat at half time and said, ‘Come on, let’s show a bit more’, and we did. We took the game to them but unfortunately it didn’t go our way.”

Next up for Blues it’s a trip to Charlton Athletic, who were promoted today after a 1-0 win at Carlisle, and Waddock said: “Why not go there and give a good account of ourselves? Who knows what can happen?”
