Dobson: Youngsters have to raise their game

RICHARD Dobson says Wanderers' younger players need to up their game if they're to play in League Two this season.

Blues' assistant manager, who has worked with most of the club's youngsters as youth team boss, said he was disappointed with their first half display in today's friendly at Staines.

They trailed at the break before goals from Richard Logan and Josh Scowen saw Blues come from behind to win the game.

But Dobson said the teenagers in the side have to raise their game if they're going to make an impact on the first team squad.

He said: "It's got to be that way. They have got to understand that every time they pull a Wycombe shirt on they have got to give everything they've got and try to influence games.

"If they are going to play in League Two football, their development has got to be accelerated. It's important they realise they can't stand still with the game, they can't afford to plateau at any stage because they'll fall behind.

"First half I think we just took part in the game. It was a little bit too nice, which often pre-season friendlies can be. You saw the other night against Forest Green they came out and took the game seriously and made it a proper game. We had to do the same today."

Dobson admitted a half time kick up the backside was needed to ensure Blues continue their unbeaten start to the pre-season campaign.

He said: "I asked them just raise it all over. It's their first game for many of these young players. They have got to realise as young players they have got to step up to the mark very, very quickly, particularly in the situation we are in with so many young players in the squad.

"It was a bit hit and miss if I'm honest. There were one or two who it looked like it was their first game of the season. They are going to have to take a little bit of time to find their form. Others on the other hand came out the blocks straight away."

Dobson said however there were positives to take away from the game.

He said: "Second half we came out a little bit stronger, got the two goals and the lads who came on as substitutes did themselves a big favour today.

"I was pretty pleased with Olly Taylor and Lee Angol and the impression they made when they came on the pitch."
