MARLOW’S Alex Danson has vowed to give it everything to ensure the GB Women’s hockey team come away with their first Olympic medal in 20 years.

They were beaten 2-1 by The Netherlands in their semi-final, meaning they must now beat New Zealand to match the bronze they won at Barcelona.

Goal-scorer Danson said: “We’re devastated to have lost, but there is absolutely no way we’re not coming away with a medal.”

The women booked their place in the semi-finals with three wins on the bounce at the start of the competition.

Danson scored twice in a 4-0 win over Japan, she scored again alongside Wycombe’s Chloe Rogers in a 5-3 victory against Korea and their place in the last four was almost certain after they beat Belgium 3-0.

And just as well.

China and The Netherlands both beat them 2-1 at the end of the group games as GB limped into the knock-out stages.
