Gaz: I want the Wanderers job

CARETAKER boss Gareth Ainsworth says he wants the job permanently - and won't be hanging up his boots just yet.

He considered retiring from playing at the end of last season and being put in temporary charge of Wanderers could have given him the perfect opportunity to call time on a 24 year career.

Ainsworth had previously said becoming a manager would mean an end to his playing days but he quipped: "I lied."

He said: "I think I've still got some playing to do, definitely this season. Maybe League One was a step too far - there's a difference, a big gap, but I did really well at this level two years ago and still think I can add something on the pitch.

"It will be difficult to combine the two but if needed - and with the current injury situation it probably will be needed - I wouldn't be afraid of putting myself on the bench or the pitch.

"The playing career's definitely not over yet but if I did get a full time manager's job it will be a big decision to make.

"It will filter out. It wouldn't just stop but I'd have to think about putting all my eggs into one basket."

Ainsworth added: "I've got two good people with me in Richard Dobson and Lee Harrison, two strong people who can make decisions on my behalf on the bench.

"If I'm on the pitch I'm sure messages can be got from me to the bench and likewise them to me."

Asked if he was interested in taking over from Gary Waddock on a full time basis, Ainsworth said: "The answer's yes, I'd love to be manager of Wycombe Wanderers, but that will come with results. Results are important first.

"I'm not striving for the job, I'm striving for points on Saturday and a performance."
