Sam Wood believes Wanderers will face the best side in League Two when they travel to the Pirelli Stadium on Easter Monday.

Burton are top of the pile heading into the Easter weekend but their lead at the summit is now just three points after they drew with Stevenage on Monday night.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s team are the only side to have put more than two goals past Wycombe this season – a 3-1 win at Adams Park in his first game as Burton boss in November – and Wood says the Brewers will be a force to be reckoned with.

He said: “They’re a great side. They got a great result against us on the Sky game and they’re up there for a reason.

“They’ve had Jimmy Floyd come in, he’s done really well and they’re performing well under him. They’ve got some great players like Bevs (Stuart Beavon) – what a player he is.

“I was only here for a short time with him but I could see what quality he had. They’ve got a great strike force going forward. They’re a decent side and it’s going to be a tough game.”

In the meantime Wanderers have the ‘M40 derby’ to focus on against Oxford at Adams Park on Good Friday.

The midfielder was keen to stress that the team will not have one eye on Monday’s top of the table clash when they entertain the lowly U’s.

“We’re just concentrating on ourselves at the moment and our aim is to get promoted. First things first we need to get the three points against Oxford and then we’ll focus on Burton,” said Wood.

“We’ll have a couple of days after Oxford to work on Burton and prepare for that game. It’s going to be a good game Monday and I’m looking forward to it but we’ve got the big one to think about first on Friday.

“The first one is the most important because we don’t want to lose, so we’re going to focus on Oxford first.

“We know Burton is a massive game. We’re both at the top and hopefully we can try and catch them, but first things first we need to get the points against Oxford on Friday.”

Wood is no stranger to the rivalry between the teams and the Good Friday encounter will be the 28-year-old’s sixth match against Oxford.

When asked if it was the most significant meeting between the sides during his time at the club Wood said: “I think so, especially at this stage of the season with the teams at opposite ends of the table.

“When it comes down to it all that matters is that we get the three points. When the two clubs meet it’s a great atmosphere, it always is, and hopefully they’ll bring a few [fans] to make it more exciting.

“We know it’s a massive game on the pitch and off the pitch for the fans with the local rivalry. It’s going to be a great day, a good derby and I’ve played in a couple of these games now. The atmosphere is great and it’s nice to be involved with it.”
