Joe Jacobson was at a loss to explain why Blues were so far from their best as their eight match unbeaten run came to an end against Oxford at Adams Park.

Anyone who has seen Wanderers this season will be used to seeing an organised team full of intensity and endeavour but the 6,892 fans that turned up witnessed an uncharacteristically poor display from the hosts.

A large crowd and a spicy atmosphere served to fire up the visitors and they were good value for the win – a victory which belied their lowly league position.

“Sometimes it just doesn’t happen. I can’t put my finger on it,” said Jacobson.

“It’s our first loss in nine and we’ve been on a great run so it’s not as if something’s changed, it was just one of those days were too many of us weren’t at our peaks and it can cost you.

“You play in a competitive league where there are players for different teams that can hurt you. They did that today and it cost us.”

Michael Appleton set his side up to play on the counter attack and speedy wingers Kemar Roofe and Danny Rose proved to be the match winners.

Roofe bagged a brace and Rose notched one, with all the goals coming from low crosses into the box which were turned home inside Wanderers’ penalty area.

Jacobson said: “You analyse the goals and think players do different things in different areas, it’s not just the final pass and shot.

“We pride ourselves on defending from the front, we’ve done that all season and we’ve got a good defensive record.

“There will be players who put their hands up and say they could have influenced the goals but as a team we didn’t do enough defensively, especially in the first half. They scored two goals on the counter attack and that hurt us today.”

Paul Hayes scored just after half-time and Aaron Holloway also found the net late on but Jacobson didn’t feel as though Wycombe had done enough against their local rivals to warrant a positive result.

“I don’t think we played as well as we have done recently or this season,” he said.

“We’ve got a way of playing and a philosophy of how we do things and I don’t think we did that today, and it cost us.

“We had a bit of a go at the start of the second half and at the end but I don’t think we were good enough to get the three points.”
