Gareth Ainsworth has admitted he is “very close” to donning his boots and coming out of retirement in the midst of Wanderers’ growing injury list.

The Blues boss could only name six players on the bench for Tuesday night’s win against Exeter, and he was forced to take Aaron Holloway and his replacement Matt McClure off before half an hour had been played at Adams Park.

The 41-year-old retired from playing in April 2013 but still plays Sunday league football to keep himself fit.

While he admitted that he doesn’t want to make a comeback he conceded that, with the treatment room filling up rapidly, he may have to against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Ainsworth said: “Looking at the squad now then you’d say I’ve got every chance of being on the subs bench even though I don’t want to be.

“We’ll do our best to get the injured players back, but losing (Joe) Jacobson on Saturday and losing potentially four players tonight (Tuesday) could hurt.

“We’ll see where we are Saturday morning and give them every possible chance to get back before the old man gets his boots on.”

Jacobson missed the game after picking up an injury against Cheltenham on Saturday, meaning the left-back joined Sido Jombati and Max Kretszchmar on the sidelines to support the team.
