There was one exclusion from Brentford's retained and released list when they announced who would be leaving the club earlier this week.

Alfie Mawson, who made 50 appearances on loan for Wanderers this season, is out of contract this summer but there was no mention of him in the Bees' club statement.

On the official club website it highlighted four players who were leaving the playing staff this summer, the players that were returning to their parent clubs and those out on loan who would be returning to west London.

There was, however, a glaring admission in the list of players who had been out on loan.

Offering no mention of Mawson, it read: "The three Brentford players who ended the season on loan – Will Grigg, Sam Saunders and Nico Yennaris – will report back for pre-season training with The Bees in July."

The latter two also enjoyed spells at Adams Park but are both contracted to the Bees for next season.

The 21-year-old was an instant hit with Blues fans after signing for the club 24 hours before the season started and his form earned him a nomination for the League Two Player of the Year award.

Wanderers fans will be hopeful that if Mawson become available that the club can land him on a similar deal to that of team mate Aaron Pierre, who joined the club last summer after a compensation package was agreed with the Bees - as is necessary for the transfer of any player under 24.
