NEWS that Gareth Ainsworth has agreed a deal to become player-coach at Wanderers can only be a positive for the club, believes Scott Donnelly.

Blues’ talismanic leader gave fans a big boost by penning a one year deal that will see him continue playing into his 21st season as a professional.

He will be 40 by the time next season finishes and with one eye on a future career in management he has also agreed to assist Blues boss Gary Waddock with coaching duties next season.

This week he’s started working towards his UEFA A coaching badges, facing a punishing schedule of 12-hour days over a two-week long course.

Ainsworth helped Waddock with coaching last season and Donnelly believes the winger’s experience will be important on the training ground next year.

Donnelly, who also played with Ainsworth during their days at QPR, said: “Everybody knows Gaz, he’s a top player. You can’t really not have someone like him in and around the team. He’s a good laugh on the training ground, he’s got good experience and he can only be a positive.

“He’ll still want to play as well, which is important.”
