PROUD Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth hailed an immense display from his side as they beat Rotherham - but said the result had been coming.

The 39-year-old had been left frustrated Blues hadn't been picking up the results to go alongside their performances in a six match winless league run.

Last night they put that run to bed as a Matt McClure brace and Dave Winfield header saw off the high-flying Millers on their own patch and Ainsworth was jubilant at finally getting his first win as full-time Wanderers boss.

He said: "It's been coming. I said before the game we're a really good bunch, a really tight bunch and I can see these boys going out together, I can see them winning and losing and battling together. I've seen that tonight, I've seen it against Rochdale and against Northampton on Saturday.

"Those results didn't go our way even though the performances warranted that. Tonight we've got the result on top of the performance and I'm over the moon for those boys, because they deserve it.

"I can only see Crewe as the the only bad performance so far since I've taken the reins. Our performances have warranted something. One of the biggest steps we've taken is to see that turning into goals. If we can keep doing that we won't go far wrong.

"There's not one I can miss out tonight, they were all fantastic. I'm proud of every person who got on that bus tonight."

An expected second half onslaught from Rotherham never materialised, even during seven minutes of injury time, and Ainsworth said that was down to the efforts of his defenders.

He said: "We've got players like Dave Winfield and Leon Johnson - they can onslaught all they want, I've got two warriors at the back that can take that. That's what they're there for and that's what they did.

"Dave Winfield has the armband at the moment and he's leading - something he hasn't done in his career yet and I think we're seeing a real warrior at the back coming out."

The only black mark against the performance was Blues falling behind after just 16 seconds and Ainsworth said: "I will never let them start like that again. They had a real rollicking at half time for that."
