Gareth Ainsworth has told Wycombe fans not to “worry” about the fact that goalkeeper Matt Ingram is yet to feature in pre-season.

The 21-year-old joined the squad for their friendly against Wealdstone on Tuesday night but played no part in the warm-up or match itself.

Ingram also watched from the sidelines in Blues’ pre-season opener against US Avranches last Thursday, leading to questions about whether his knee injury, which was sustained against Northampton back in May, may see him miss the start of the season.

Back-up stopper Alex Lynch, who stepped in the Wycombe No1 during the club’s play-off campaign, played 90 minutes against The Stones, and the 20-year-old along with goalkeeping coach Barry Richardson provide Ainsworth’s only other options between the posts.

“Yes he will,” declared the Blues boss when asked whether Ingram will feature in pre-season.

“Matt’s going to be back very shortly, and it was a great opportunity for Alex Lynch to play and get 90 minutes because when Matt’s back he’s going to need games and need fitness.

“It was the right thing to do to get Lynchy 90 minutes, he needs it and he got it tonight (Tuesday). I thought he performed well, took everything he needed to.

“His kicking was a little bit off for Alex Lynch’s standards but he did really well in the one-on-one, so I was pleased with him. Matty Ingram will be back very soon and there’s no need to worry for the Wycombe fans.”
