BEACONSFIELD RFC’s first choice backs might find themselves out in the cold for a while.

Five of them were unavailable for last Saturday’s trip to rampant league leaders Bury St Edmunds, and their replacements grasped their chance with both hands.

Beaconsfield lost the match 55-20, but compared to some of Bury’s resounding scores this season that was something of a victory and coach Allan Greene admits the stand-ins have given him a few selection headaches.

He said: “I told them if they put a shift in and played for the badge I’d stand by them, and they did that.

“We had a 19-year-old making his debut on the wing, our number ten has been in the second team all season, the full back hadn’t played in the first team for a year and a half and our regular full back played outside centre.

“But the lads got on with it and did everything we asked of them, and more.”

Andy Zaire, Alex Cannon and Fred Winton scored the tries with Ross Ritchie adding five points with the boot, and the margin of victory slightly flattered the home side.

Beaconsfield reached the break just 19-13 down and once they’d got three tries they opened up in a bid to get a fourth and nail down a try bonus.

Bury exploited the gaps to score twice more themselves and give the scoreboard an inflated look.

Greene said: “I can’t see any reason why they can’t keep their places.

“If they come in and play like that and then just get kicked out again, what sort of precedent does that set? That wouldn’t sit well with me.”

The coach has two weeks to mull it over. Beaconsfield return to action a week on Saturday against Colchester.
