Wycombe District Swimming Club (WDSC) hosted its last ever gala last weekend after almost 40 years of staging events.

The club moved to its current Handy Cross location in 1975 but will move into a new state of the art eight-lane pool on the same sight imminently.

It is estimated that the venue has hosted around 150 meets in its history and although there is an acceptance that the club needs a new pool there is also emotion attached to the move.

Club Chairman, Chris Ross, said: “It was great watching the next generation of swimmers saying goodbye to the current pool – which has served us so well for so long.”

Mr Ross’ sentiments were echoed by many of the teams who attended the event and have built up strong memories of competing in the pool over the years.

Head Coach at Thame Swimming Club, Ian Blythe, said: “As regular visitors to competitions hosted by WDSC we’re glad we could be here for the last ever competition in the current pool.

“Looking at the competition schedule for next year, it’s clear that the new pool will quickly become a destination venue for high level swimming and we will definitely be attending.”

Jonathan Mills who refereed the meet claimed being in charge of the last ever event was a privilege and that the club brought the curtain down on its long-serving home in fitting style.

The club has been running since the 1930s and its galas have become a favourite for both WDSC swimmers and clubs from across the country.

Over 100 WDSC swimmers, many of whom came from the junior age groups, took part and local teams including Thame, Bourne End, Maxwell and Chalfont Otters all attended the gala.

Competitors from further afield included Bicester Blue Fins, City of Coventry Swimming Club and Dunstable Swimming Club, while WDSC’s twin club Kelkheim Schwimmclub travelled all the way from Germany to be involved.

The two clubs have developed a close relationship since twinning with each other. Members from the German club have even stayed at the homes of WDSC swimmers when visiting the UK for competitions.

Kelkheim coach Csaba Vida enjoyed last weekend’s event and is looking forward to competing in the new pool starting from next year.

She said: “The partnership between High Wycombe and Kelkheim is important to us, not only for the swimming, but for the great friends we have made.

“Looking at the competition schedule for next year, it’s clear that the new pool will quickly become a destination venue for high level swimming competitions and we will definitely be attending.”
