It was a case of so close yet so far away for Marlow Hockey’s under-16 boys’ team as they lost the National Final to Surbiton on Sunday.

Marlow were impressive on their way to the final but couldn’t quite match the quality of a very strong Surbiton side who ran out 4-0 winners.

While the loss was obviously a disappointment, Marlow captain Toby Bruce instead chose to focus on the positives of being the second best team across the country for their age group.

“It was a fantastic weekend, with an amazing crowd behind us, most notably in the final against Surbiton,” Bruce said.

“While the result wasn’t what we wanted we gave absolutely everything we had and played our hearts out. It is something that will stick in the memory of all the boys.

“It’s been an honour to captain the boys to two national finals in what has been an incredible season, and a great achievement for the club. Hopefully there will be more success to come in the future.”

Marlow arrived at the finals, which were held at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, unbeaten and soon set about qualifying from the round robin phase of the tournament.

Their first match pitted them against Guildford Hockey Club and saw them start slowly before growing into the game.

They were on top throughout the rest of the match but failed to hold onto their advantage despite taking the lead as they ultimately drew 1-1.

The result meant Marlow’s next match was a must win and they duly delivered as Cameron Beazley-Clarke scored the only goal of the game.

The win set up a group decider the following morning against Canterbury in a match which Marlow dominated from start to finish.

Nick Winter (2), Elliot Killington and Tom Sheldon scored the goals for Kate Porter’s side as they romped home to a 4-0 win to reach the final.

Porter has played an important role in the development of the under-16 team and her captain was full of praise for the work she has done.

“We wouldn’t have got as far as we did without the support of Kate,” Bruce said.

“It is a great way for Kate to round of an awesome three years coaching us. We are extremely grateful to Kate – she has made a big difference to our team and how we’ve performed.”

The final was a far more competitive match than the scoreline would suggest and but for some poor finishing from Marlow the result could have been closer.

Instead Surbiton raced to a 3-0 lead at the interval and their strength in depth allowed them to extend their advantage in the second half to confirm the result.
