Alex Hales has missed out on a call-up to the squad to face Australia in five Tests this winter.
The former Chesham Grammar School pupil and Nottinghamshire batsman was tipped in many quarters to be picked for the gruelling tour.
However, he was overlooked for a middle order role, likely to be at five, in favour of James Vince and Gary Ballance.
Hales has been in impressive form this summer and has done well in the Big Bash in Australia, the country's version of the T20 domestic tournament.
Squad for Ashes:
Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Joe Root, Dawid Malan, Gary Ballance, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Craig Overton, Mason Crane, Jake Ball.
