WANDERERS managing director Steve Hayes has bought out the club's groundshare tenants London Wasps.

He has taken a 97 per cent stake in the Guinness Premiership champions after buying out the shares of Chris Wright and John O'Connell.

Hayes, who also owns a 25 per cent stake in Wanderers, says having a foot in both camps will strengthen both clubs' positions.

But he has ruled out merging them into one super sports club run by one board, although he did say that there could be a joint stadium board if the clubs get their dream of a shared 17-20,000 capacity stadium at Booker Airfield.

Hayes, who previously had an 11 per cent stake in Wasps, says he had the unanimous backing from the Wanderers board over his decision to run both clubs.

Hayes has promised Blues fans that having dual control won't dilute his interest in the football club.

He plans to delegate a lot of the work at Wasps and to that end he has assembled a new-look board at the rugby club which includes former club captains Lawrence Dallaglio and Mark Rigby, long-term business advisor Mike Brooks alongside current board members John O'Connell, Ivor Montlake and Tony Copsey.

Speaking at a press Conference this morning Hayes said: "London Wasps is undeniably one of the most successful clubs in Europe on the pitch and, as we look to the future, I have a very clear vision which will incorporate and align all facets of the club to this level of success.

"We are determined to stay at the forefront of European rugby."

Thanks BFP for breaking this news so promptly

Can we now get rid of the silly "London" part of the Wasps name???? "Wycombe Wasps" with alliteration sounds better anyway.

Just Wasps is fine. Wycombe Wasps already belongs to a BMX club.

(Security word: acid-user, how do they know?)

The full name would be WYCOMBE WASPS RUGBY CLUB....!!

“their dream of a shared 17-20,000 capacity stadium at Booker Airfield.”

The last thing we need is a monstrous stadium at Booker Airfield. The “London Wasps” haven’t even bothered to call themselves after the town in which they play and the attendances at the football clubs matches as so poor that on average their current 10,000 capacity stadium is less than half full for their Saturday league matches.

If the future of Booker Aerodrome is in doubt as far as I’m concerned the Wasps can buzz off!

Ok, I've lifted this from the club official website, from a poster called Nobody in Particular, a bit of info for you:

"The club was founded in 1867, and the London tag was only added at the beginning of the 2001/2 season. At the time, we were the only Premiership club who played at a ground with a London postal code. Rather ironic that it was to be our last season in London. If only they'd waited a few months, they would never have needed to change the name, which is now a stick with which other clubs choose to beat us. The Quins announcer was particularly sneering about it, a couple of weeks ago.

134 years as Wasps. 7 as London Wasps."

Re the comments of Elmo at 8:44am

If they only played one season in London there should be no problems in dropping the London from their name.

The fact they have failed to do so just reinforces my point. If they can’t be bothered to call themselves after the town in which they play what right have they got to have ambitions on a new stadium that could possibly close our marvellous air field?

I agree with Ivor. Dump the London part of the name. WASPS is fine, but Wycombe WASPS is better. I hope that Steve will, ensure WW has priorty for matches over WASPS, as it is WW's ground. ONWARDS & UPWARDS to both OUR teams.

OK, say they did rename themselves Wycombe Wasps RFC, would that persuade you all to go?

I feel fairly safe making the assumption that those wanting Wasps to prostitute their heritige in this way currently don't attend matches.

How's this...

...it has been suggested that a possible name might be London Wanderers.

Re the comments of Elmo at 10:39am on Mon 8 Dec 08

They have had enough time to rename themselves (several years) and I feel their failure to embrace the town in which they play has alienated them from the people of the town.

They have shown their true colours by continuing to use the word “London” in their name and they have plans to build a stadium at Booker which could jeopardise our wonderful Wycombe Air Park (note it’s called WYCOMBE Air Park and not LONDON Air Park!) so as far as I’m concerned the wasps can just buzz off somewhere else!

Actually Ivor, I think you've shown your true colours:

Never been, never likely to go, therefore not holding a valid opinion.
