MIDSOMER MURDERS is to lose its Detective Chief Inspector.

After years of solving murders in the British countryside DCI Tom Barnaby, played by John Nettles, has decided to call it a day.

The ITV show has been running since 1997 and filming of the show takes place in Buckinghamshire as well as Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Surrey.

Now in its 13th series it has been confirmed that DCI Barnaby will only appear in 2 more series of the show with his final scene being shown in 2011.

“It has been a joy to be involved in such a long running series with so many good actors and great storyline” said John

“It's the end of an era,” he added.

ITV has commissioned the show until 2012 and has vowed to keep the show running after the departure of Nettles.

Producer Brian True-May said: “The brand of Midsomer is so strong that I am confident of its continuing success with a new actor”

The 14th series will see the entrance of a new DCI on our screens

“I wish my successor, whoever he or she is, the very best” said Nettles
