Christmas in Wycombe 2011

By ivor »

Well, Christmas is finally here.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and the very best wishes for the New Year.

As with other years my neighbour has invited me to spend Christmas Day and Boxing Day with them.

Naturally I dressed in my finest trousers and dinner jacket with a lovely crisp white shirt and bow tie. It's so nice to dress up for a meal don't you think?

This year I went round to my neighbours earlier than usual and helped with the preparations.

After peeling what seemed like a hundred potatoes and pouring peas in to saucepans I was thoroughly tired out. Thankfully I was spared the difficult tasks like making the bread sauce or mixing the stuffing.

Now I realise just how much work it takes to prepare a Christmas meal however the end results are most definitely worth it.

We sat down to lunch around 12.30pm.

With the best of intentions my neighbour put some of their homegrown brussel sprouts on my plate.

Being honest I just can't stand sprouts with turkey so, with slight of hand while my neighbour was distracted, I managed to take them off the plate and put them in a napkin concealed in my trouser pocket. Thankfully there wasn't any gravy on them.

Reflecting back on the events so far it makes me realise how lucky we are to be able to have such a feast. With decorations hanging on the wall, a lovely Christmas tree and presents to go with it we are indeed blessed.

I have been looking out of the window and all is quiet in the street. There isn't any movement at all indeed I haven't even seen any young children out on their new bicycles.

I suppose the newfangled computer games and other electronic toys are more popular than bicycles these days.

Anyway I have to get back to the party as they think yours truly has nipped home for a few moments to get the presents. In actual fact I am writing my blog and disposing of the unwanted brussels!

My carefully timed absence will also mean that hopefully yours truly avoids having to help with the washing up.

I may well take my laptop back with me to show my neighbour some pictures of old Wycombe that I have downloaded so please feel free to leave a comment and I will reply as soon as possible.

Are you having a nice Christmas too? Perhaps you would like to share your own experiences of Christmas 2012 with us by leaving a comment?

Edna is drunk. How drunk? She's commenting on Ivor's blog on Christmas Day. That drunk.
.
Merry Christmas, Ivor. Hope you've had your cracker well and truly pulled, followed by a decent stuffing.
.
Now I'm off to referee an arm wrestle between my son and his partner.

Oh dear, I am so sorry to hear that you are drunk and will be unable to enjoy the festivities.
~
My neighbour offered me some wine with my lunch and naturally I rejected it....
~
Unfortunately we don't have any crackers so it is unlikely to be pulled....
~
I hope the arm wrestle went well, you will have to tell us who won!

Just a quick hello Ivor to wish you a very happy Christmas, a bit late but I have been out all day, and I am 4 hours ahead of you. I would also like to wish Morag a very happy Christmas.

Hello Lorraine, Happy Christmas to you too! I hope you are having an enjoyable time?
~
Being four hours ahead does that mean that your Christmas started four hours before ours here in Wycombe?

Yes, you were right, I have just woken up after nodding off in the arm chair, I ate too much turkey and it made me feel drowsy!

Happy Christmas to Ivor, Edna, Lorraine and absent friends! (JBB, D, Mel, PCC, Brachy, Tom et al)
.
Our last family Christmas all together didn't go quite according to plan. After weeks of cooking and planning, I woke up ill at 4 o' clock this morning......
.
Didn't think I would be able to manage, but with a lot of help and a bit of re-arranging, the food was cooked, the wine was drunk and a good time was had by all, including me.
I am starting to feel better now.
.
I hope you all had a great Christmas. x
.
P.S. Where are you this year, Lorraine?
Somewhere nice and sunny? Hope you are enjoying yourself.

I am sorry to hear that you were ill, I was poorly last Christmas and I know how awful it can be especially at this time of year.

Good morning Ivor, yes My Christmas did start 4 hours before yours. Glad that your neighbours invited you again and you didn't have to spend it alone. Sorry to hear that you were unwell Morag, rotten time of the year to feel ill especially when you have so many people banking on you bringing it all together. Sounds like it all went well in the end, and you are feeling better. Well I am in Dubai this year, first time here. My Friends daughter lives here and has done for 5 years. She misses her Daughter very much, but does have some fantastic holidays when she visits. I hope you can get some consolation from this, there has to be positives. We were going to the Caribbean again this year but decided to come here and meet up with our Friends. We are having a fantastic time, mostly because of our friends and their Friends. A much livlier holiday than we nomally have, and I am enjoying every minute. Later today, we are going to indulge in some obscene luxury, afternoon tea at the Burj. It seems that thats what happens here. Cakes are one of my weaknesses, fortunately, I have packed some loose fitting clothes. I hope you all enjoy whats left of the holidays, and will pop in later. By the way Morag, some more photo's won't go amiss, do enjoy seeing them, and the little duck.

Yes - that's something to look forward to - what I don't like about the ending of Christmas is the way that really unpleasant things said to igor - like encouragements to commit hara kiri - no longer seem so shocking - or at all shocking - outside the festive season.”
Still only a year to go as you say.

What did you DO with igor Morag that you can do next Christmas - or am I misunderstanding something?
