What happened to our English traditions?

This week Saturday morning started as normal.

After rising at 9.30am it was straight down stairs to eat breakfast and read the daily newspaper.

When lunchtime came I tucked into a hearty meal of traditional fish and chips before going out into the garden in the afternoon.

If it had been a little later in the year with warmer weather I would have partaken in the quintessentially British activity of cutting the lawn on a Saturday afternoon however the conditions are not quite there yet so I did some weeding in the long flower border.

Soon it was tea time so yours truly duly went indoors and tucked into sponge cakes and some orange squash before retiring to my favourite arm chair to sit, while wearing my slippers, to finish off reading the paper.

I think it can be said that so far I have enjoyed a traditional English weekend.

With tomorrow being Sunday I will treat it as a day of rest. Once upon a time shops closed on a Sunday but now most of them are open for business.

All too often the activities that can be looked upon as traditional English activities are being slowly and steadily worn away and now English culture is being diluted and changed with every day that passes.

On Saturday evening a news article appeared on this site entitled “Regatta fireworks and concert axed” which stated that the fireworks and concert which have been part of Marlow regatta since 1891 are not taking place this year.

Events like village fêtes, regattas and fairs are all part of our cultural heritage and the news concerning the Marlow regatta is one more nail in the coffin for our long running traditions.

Our very own Wycombe show finished years ago and when it comes to parades and displays in the town centre there is very little done by the native townspeople.

Even when it comes to dress attitudes have changed.

How many men still wear a proper cap or hat or how many men still polish their shoes every evening? Not many I fear.

Food is another area where traditional dishes have been put to one side in favour of American style fast food with burgers, shakes and fries or even dishes from other countries.

Only last week one of the youngsters at work asked me if I wanted a shake with my sandwiches, not realising what they meant I told them that I wanted to be perfectly steady when eating and asked them not to touch me while I enjoyed my lunch.

In my opinion our society is in decline both morally and culturally.

The loss of community events and long running ways of going on is just one manifestation of the slow and steady slip further into the abyss.

What happened to the tradition of telling the truth?

Something that you're often averse to doing, especially when it comes to the "Historical" Bigun family of High Wycombe.

Also, you never tell the truth about going to the library in regards to the muster role records showing an entry for members of the Bigun family...

It's all lies Ivor.

Surely lawn mowing is an activity for a SUNDAY - traditionally Englishmen are out of their minds on Saturdays.

But I can't cook. The fish and chips were a ready meal that came from my freezer. I just put them in the hot cupboard and took them out after the specified time. They were a little over done though but I am so hungry that I am glad to eat anything.

Sunday is a day of rest and reading the papers. Saturday is for outdoor jobs and moving the lawn.
~
Many years ago we used to cut the lawn daily to keep the fine fescues in tip-top shape but sadly I no longer have the money for the petrol to run the historic mower every day.

Sometimes the lawn is cut on a Friday if guests are expected on the Saturday.

I have no problem with your choice of using a fictional name with deliberate innuendo.

My issue with you is your constant insistence that everything you say is the truth, but logic dictates otherwise.

Logic, combined with you reluctance to answer questions directly, or even pledge a simple oath only proves my point that you have been lying.

Ivor, I see that you're now reverting to your standard cop-out phrase...

The phrase you often use when you can no longer think of an answer.

This only proves that you do not have the conviction to back-up your words.

We can only deduce from this that you are in fact... A LIAR

Alberto, me old mate, YAWN!, you've made your point, over and over and over again, well done, it started off as mildly amusing and is now just boring. Change the record eh?
As for fish and chip shops, there's still one that I've been visiting for years and years in Desborough road, if you time it correctly, you will get a proper portion of fish and chips, in the very English style, cooked by a gentleman of Chinese extraction.Goes to show that you have to be a bit careful when harping on about 'English' traditions. The best Chippy for miles is in Thame and it's run by a Portugese family.
And as for why nothing ever happens in Wycombe for the locals, I think the blame for that falls squarely at the feet of the council, as they will do their best to stop anything like a festival in the town, and if they fail the old bill will prevent it happening by charging a fortune to police it.Unless of course you belong to some kind of minority, in which case you'll get their blessings, 'cos they(police and council) don't want to be accused of being, and i hate to bring this word into the conversation, rascist.

I don't know if it's racist but , all over the country , these festivals have been 'commandeered' or even 'hijacked' by unappointed self interest groups - to the exclusion of the majority of most people.
.
And it is I am afraid really mostly about certain groups of people making money ( sometimes lots of it ) out of their audiences or spectators.
.
There again you can't provide live all-round entertainment for everybody without some people decrying that and calling it bland or worse. Like the low-grade stuff on TV nowadays.
.
Some people will just eat what's put in front of them - like junk food. The same applies to entertainment , I'm afraid. No talent is needed for these 'talent' shows.
.
The UK aspiration in this arena is at a low ebb at the moment ; and I don't know what the answer is. But it's not the exploiter Simon Cowell or even with free junk trans-fat food from KFC thrown in.
.
Still it looks like a nice Spring day out there at the moment.

I do hope you will :-) Please, JBB. I asked nicely.
.
I too am fed up with the yawn-inducing boring comments from "other quarters". They have made their point. Endlessly.
.
I fear they will never realise that Ivor will just carry on as usual despite their attempted hi-jacking of his blog and filling of his coffers.
.
As regards village fetes, fayres etc., isn't part of the problem good old-fashioned apathy? Many of us are quick to complain about their decline, but how many put themselves forward to organise such an event? So many people live such "busy" lives, they haven't the time or energy or the inclination to contribute.
.
Ivor has frequently complained over the years that there is "nothing to do" in Wycombe. Many time I have pointed out forthcoming events but he is always otherwise engaged. I have seen Clairabella inviting him to events she has helped to organise but he has never reported back. You challenged him about the lunchtime concerts yourself, JBB.
.
If Ivor really cared he would find out what is going on, blog about the events, make the effort to attend a few and report back.
.
Still, we could always discuss his sandwich fillings instead. Btw, I think you will find he can afford to shop at Marks & Spencers Foodhall, not Tesco's Basic range.
.
Oh dear, JBB. I see what you mean.... I seem to have got sucked in again too :-))

I suppose I ought not to discourage you though – this is the first time you have attempted to be clever with words and it has not degenerated into a partly-alliterative word-spew.

When I was a student we used to go to a Chinese takeaway where the lady in charge could not say 'fried rice' - she would say 'flied lice' instead - we thought this was hilariously funny and she used to say it just to make us laugh even if we were ordering something completely different. (It was quite nice food as well.)
