I can truly sympathise with the frustration of people like ‘ex nuclear power pioneer’ Roderick Taylor: that the world just ain’t like it used to be (Letters, June 27).

We can agree on that: as NASA reports that the recent Antarctic ice-melt is now unstoppable.

Ingenious humans can readily get all the energy they need from renewable sources. And ultimately, of course, we have to. The clue is in the name. ‘Renewable’ energy is called renewable, because it is.

All other forms of ‘non-renewable’ energy (nuclear included as it happens) are not.

We can moan that renewable energy is ‘fickle’. Or we can enjoy the free energy we have and rely on it, always.

As many already are, “off-grid”, happily ever after. Set free from all energy bills! Imagine that.

Investing our funds (and hopes) into anything other than ‘renewable’ energy is an odd strategy. As the ad on the tube says: “Why invest for your grandchildren’s future in something (fossil fuel) that will ruin it.”

I divested from non-renewable enterprise long ago, and my pension is in tomorrow's energy. Not yesterday’s.

My home’s energy efficient, solar panels meet most of my needs, my bills are low and I still have a conscience. We don’t need no (dirty old-school) central generation.

Not in our back yards; not if we already have local ‘renewables’ there. I enjoy living within a few feet of my favoured energy solutions.

I wonder if fans of fracking and nuclear can say the same. — David Hampton, Chartered Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist, Marlow
