Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has reflected on his side’s 1-0 win at home against Accrington Stanley.

Jason McCarthy goal on 21 minutes on his first league start of the campaign was all that settled the two teams.

The victory has now lifted the Chairboys up to 10th who are now four games unbeaten.

It was also Wanderers’ first home league win of the season since the opening day triumph against Burton Albion.

Speaking to the press, Ainsworth said: “Their keeper has made lots of saves as we could have had one or two more goals.

“Anis, again, was a real thorn in their side but the way teams have to come at us to break us down is a compliment.

“They are committing bodies forward to try and get us and when Anis gets the ball, he just does what he does, and I think we could have got a few more goals.

“Our defending was brilliant.

“When Max was called up upon, he was outstanding, and it’s a win to help us up the table.”

The boss also praised the performance of McCarthy following the win.

His winning strike was his first since the middle of March, and after suffering an injury in the early stages of pre-season, the 26-year-old has had to be patient to try and force his way back into the starting 11.

Wanderers started with five at the back with McCarthy playing as a right-wing back, whilst Jack Grimmer, who also had a good game, played as a centre half alongside Ryan Tafzolli and Alfie Mawson.

Ainsworth continued: “Jason McCarthy gives everything.

“I trust him so much.

“When he goes onto the pitch, he sometimes gives me too much.

“He can go forward and his energy is incomparable to anyone else, but today [September 13] I thought he was brilliant.

“It was a great goal and a great finish, but the back five and shape/formation was the key to the win.

“The boys were brilliant.”

Finally, the boss is hoping that the positive performances could lead to more goals in their wins.

So far this season, Wycombe have scored 11 league goals, but in their victory over the North West club, they could have been out of sight if it wasn’t for the heroics of Lukas Jensen in the Stanley goal.

Ainsworth concluded: “A clean sheet is nice but it would have been perfect if we had a few more goals.

“I am happy that we can compete with anyone in the division.”

Up next is Derby County away on September 17.
