A man who was caught speeding in Little Chalfont is calling for better signage in the area.

Dr David Rosen was driving along the A404 Amersham Road around nine years ago when he was caught by a mobile camera van.

The speed limit on the road changes from 60mph to 30mph just after the sign for Little Chalfont.

Dr Rosen said: “I didn’t think anything of it at the time, I did the speed awareness course – but then going past the area again, I thought there was a real problem with the signage.

“I looked into it some more and found there were a lot of speeding offences for that stretch of road, including 2,261 in 2019.

“The council needs to improve the signs. I remembered thinking when I was driving there the first time that I didn’t know what the speed limit was.

“It’s a small thing in that it wouldn’t cost much to make the signage clearer, but it is a big thing in that thousands of people are getting these speeding tickets there every year.”

A report into the issue commissioned by Dr Rosen says it is “evident that the current minimal signage is inadequate and fails to effectively enforce the speed limit change".

It adds: “The combination of the speed limit change with the staggered junction and two bus stops is unsatisfactory.

“Buckinghamshire Council are strongly advised to take action to remedy the inadequacies that have been identified.”

Dr Rosen, from Lancaster, has also been in talks over the years with Buckinghamshire Council leader Martin Tett who, in an email from July 2015 seen by the Bucks Free Press, insists that “the signage is quite clear as one enters Little Chalfont from Chorleywood”.

He added: “I need to be very clear that I do not see further signage at this entrance to the village as a priority for the expenditure of hard-pressed council taxpayers money.

“As the local county councillor, yours is the only letter I have ever received complaining about this matter.

“By contrast I have, over the years, received large numbers of letters complaining about inconsiderate motorists who ignore clear traffic signs and who continue to speed through the village endangering adults and children alike as they attempt to cross the road.”

In an official statement Mr Tett, who is also the Cllr for Little Chalfont, said: “I understand Dr Rosen obtained a speeding ticket whilst travelling above the speed limit through Little Chalfont village.

“The site of the safety camera is approximately half a mile past the entrance to the built-up area of Little Chalfont, which is well signed by prominent 30mph speed limit signs, and then the continuous built up area.

“We see no reason to change our view that the signage is quite adequate.”
