Santander has confirmed that their Marlow branch will be one of 111 stores to shut later this year.

The Spanish lender said all outlets will close by the end of August 2021 but claimed most of the affected areas are less than three miles from another Santander branch.

Marlow's branch will shut its doors in July 2021 with the nearest stores to High Wycombe and Maidenhead.

The bank will retain a network of 452 branches following the proposed changes.

Closures will start on June 24, with four in London and one in Glasgow amongst those scheduled to shut on this date

A statement said staff will contact potentially vulnerable customers by phone to provide individual support in the next five months.

It also added that all current and business account holders will be able to bank at one of 11,000 Post Office branches instead.

The move comes in response to an ongoing shift towards mobile and online banking accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Mobile and online transactions have been growing by 20% each year, with almost two-thirds of transactions now digital.

Branch transactions fell by a third over two years prior to the pandemic and declined by a further 50% in 2020 at the height of the health crisis.
