A High Wycombe woman has admitted to being ‘stumped’ after she struggled to understand her six-year-old’s homework.

Laura Rathbone, who lives in the town, took to social media to show a piece of paper that her daughter, Lilly-Mo, received from school.

On it, she was asked to work out which one of the five words chosen was the odd one out, whilst also being asked to explain their reason.

The chosen words were ‘silver, desk, toothbrush, egg and friend’.

Speaking to the American news outlet www.today.com, the 40-year-old said: “At first, I thought I was losing my mind.

“I was like, what am I missing here?’

“I posted in a group with loads of mums hoping they would have the answer.”

The post unexpectedly went viral with many people suggesting what word was the odd one out.

One suggested that it was toothbrush as it’s the only one without the letter e, whilst another said that egg was the answer as it was the only edible option.

Another user believed friend was the correct answer due to being the only word that couldn’t be phonetically pronounced, whilst someone else also suggested friend as the other four words were objects.

And after much guessing, it later turned out that the correct answer was silver as it was the only word from the list to be an adjective and a noun, whilst the other four were the latter.

Laura continued: “Everybody had different theories, and it was quite interesting - I really enjoyed reading all of the comments.

“It’s a real brain teaser!”
