FAILINGS that left a vulnerable man in ‘crisis’ with his housing have prompted a council to be ordered to pay out more than £1,700 to the tenant.

Milton Keynes City Council must pay the man, known only as Mr X, £1,750 after causing him “injustice” by failing to properly assess his housing needs.

The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman found that there was fault by the council after it failed to ensure that the accommodation he was given was suitable.

The ombudsman said: “It took too long to assess his care needs and did not progress with any support planning to meet these.

“The council failed to respond to his complaint and closed this when it should not have done. The council’s failings had a serious impact on Mr X’s mental health, and his ability to continue with medical treatment.”

The council said it had apologised to Mr X for his “poor experience”, that it had complied with the ombudsman and would “learn from this case”.

Mr X told the council in spring 2022 that he had been ordered to leave his private lodgings, after which it placed him in temporary accommodation in London.

The front door of his new house allegedly did not lock properly, and Mr X “did not have access to his regular carers”, meaning he could not leave the property to go shopping or eat.

He was assessed by the mental health crisis team, who said his temporary housing “was making his health worse and triggering a crisis”.
