Luke O’Nien has spoken of the pride he feels when wearing the Wycombe Wanderers shirt after scoring in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Mansfield Town.

The midfielder’s diving header opened the scoring after eight minutes and set the Blues on the way to their first win since the end of September.

Having arrived at Wycombe in the summer the 20-year-old is enjoying his time at the club and feels privileged to be able to play for the Adams Park faithful.

“It is always an honour to have the Wycombe shirt on. The fans have been absolutely outstanding, and have been all season and have stuck with us in our tough times. For me that is a sign of a great club,” he said.

“I am really happy to be part of Wycombe Wanderers and have the great support of the Wycombe fans behind me.”

With goals representing an important part of a modern midfielder’s game O’Nien will be expected to chip in throughout the campaign.

He timed his run superbly to arrive from midfield – with Gareth Ainsworth agreeing it was a typical late midfield run – and head home with ease from just five yards out after Garry Thompson had headed the ball across goal.

The goal was his second of the season after he scored in the 3-2 defeat at Northampton in early October and he was pleased his contribution came with the reward of three points this time round.

“I’m absolutely buzzing. Like I said last time when I scored and we lost I would rather not score and win, so today was a double bonus for me and I thought everyone was brilliant today,” O’Nien explained.

“I have always worked on getting into the box and the manager is always talking about one of the midfielders getting forward to support the attack.

“Goals are always important to me and I have worked hard on my heading and finishing. The most important thing though is the result and if I score that is just a bonus.”

O’Nien has fast become an important part of the Wycombe midfield this year and for a player who was yet to start a senior game before the season opened has played with great maturity.

Ainsworth praised the speed with which he has acclimatised to League Two football and is happy to see every member of his side sharing the goal scoring responsibilities.

He said: “Goals are coming from everywhere which is great and we are spreading the goals around which is a sign of a great team.”
