The mission statement for Wycombe Wanderers’ new loan signing Rowan Liburd can be boiled down to one salient point. To score goals.

Liburd arrived on loan at Adams Park last Friday and has been tasked with helping the Blues find the net with greater regularity during his one-month stay.

The 23-year-old was thrown straight in a day after signing as he led the line during Wycombe’s 1-0 defeat at Newport County, and he is well aware of the qualities he must try and bring to the Wanderers attack.

“Goals is really what they want from me. I need to get some good experience under my belt, get some games and just try and get as many goals as possible,” Liburd said.

“I am really grateful to Wycombe for giving me a chance to play some league games.

“I want to just keep kicking on and developing, so we can hopefully start to get some points and push on for the play-offs.”

Each of Wycombe’s last five matches have finished 1-0 and they have come out on the wrong side on three occasions.

Gareth Ainsworth’s side have also looked lacklustre going forward and have registered just six times since the turn of the year.

It is a big ask to expect Liburd, whose start on Saturday was his first in league football, to carry the burden of being Wycombe’s main goal threat during his loan, but he showed enough promise to suggest he can contribute.

The Reading loanee put in a display full of power and purpose, and was unlucky not to score as he smashed a right-footed effort against the crossbar in the second half.

“I just try to hit the target and the one that hit the bar was unlucky, but you really have to be scoring if you are going to get anything form the game, especially when you are away from home,” Liburd said of his debut.

“It is my first start in the league so I am happy about that. I am unhappy about the result but I thought we played better in the second half and we’ll go again next week.

“It was more physical and I got a few more challenges on me but the tempo was similar to the under-21s.

“It was a bit more direct but I am kind of used to that having come from non-League football. It was a good experience for me and I enjoyed it.”

The 6ft 3in front man enjoyed a prolific five month spell at Isthmian Premier League side Billericay Town last season and the hope is he can reproduce such form at a higher level.

It is a big ask, of course, but Ainsworth was impressed with what he saw from his new charge on Saturday.

He said: “I think he was accomplished and he didn’t make many mistakes. He can learn and we can guide him through things, so he is going to be an exciting prospect and his first goal won’t be far away.”

Liburd is expected to start in tomorrow’s match against Stevenage and will surely look to grab his first goal for the Chairboys on his home debut.
